June 26, 2011 – The great South African trumpeter, composer, and singer Hugh Masekela gave a stellar performance in New York City at the Central Park Summer Stage.
Born in Kwa-Guqa Township, South Africa; as a child Masekela sang and played the piano. It was the movie Young Man With a Horn that inspired him to start playing the trumpet.
Masekela, 72, continues to play with a ferocity reflected in his history as an early public voice against apartheid. And, with over 30 albums he remains an important sound in jazz music.
